What I Did With Our Old Garage Door ~ part 2

In my last post, I told you that we got a new garage door and decided to keep the old one to make things.

One "thing" we made was a sign for two little girls.

And . . . here is a preview of the other "thing" we made.

A king sized headboard.

love. it.

I would have paid $1,000 for it . . .
well, if I had a $1,000 to spend on a headboard, that is.

I will post more pictures of it when I can get better light in the room.

(and when I accessorize a little more)

We decided to keep all the holes to add character to the piece.

We painted it white and sanded it down a ton.

I can't wait to show you more pictures. 

I will put together a little tutorial soon so you can beg your husband to rip out your old garage door and make a headboard, too.

On a different note . . .

The kids are going back to school tomorrow.

I am feeling mixed emotions.

I feel happy that I am going to finally have some time to myself . . .

time to exercise,

time to work on my painted boards,

time to get a little organized,

time to breathe,

time to use my iPhone without the kids begging to play games on it,

time to decorate.

I feel sad that the kids are getting older . . .

they are getting more independent each year and sometimes I long for the days when we just play all day in our jammies.  Those days are so few and far between now.

I feel regret . . .

I wish I had done "this" or "that" with them this summer. (like taking them to a sandy beach)

I am trying to think of all the things that we did do this summer and relish in those memories instead of getting caught up in the things we did not get to do.

What I Did with our Old Garage Door ~ part 1

We had a garage door that was in need of being replaced.
It was heavy.
It was old.
It was starting to make our house look, well . . . old.

I kept telling my husband that I was worried it would just come crashing down someday. (I always, of course, added that it would crash down on me or the kids or the car.)
My husband, in husbandly fashion, told me that would never happen.
Then one day, I heard it.
The crash.
Luckily, it didn't crash on anyone or anything.
And I don't think I remember saying, "I told you so." 

After the garage door guy installed our nice new garage door, he put our old door up on his truck, but right before he was going to leave I made my husband tell him to take the door down.  I realized it was made out of wood and I figured I could use it for something . . .

I paint signs.

We cut the door up. (by "we" I mean my husband)

Here is one panel of it after I painted this sign for a customer. 
She has two little girls whose name begin with the letter "C".




I'm so glad I saved the door!

I can't wait to make more signs with it.

Wait until you see what else "we" made out of that old garage door. :)

Super Easy Toffee Bars

We are going to visit some friends tonight.
I want to make a yummy dessert to take with us.
My kids suggested I make these bars. 
I posted this recipe a while ago here on the blog, but I thought I would repost just in case you missed it. :) 

They are so good.

Make them at your own risk . . .

Here's what you do . . .
Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

Put a layer of saltine crackers on the parchment paper.
(I like to put them salted side down so you can taste the salt)

Melt two sticks of butter with one cup of brown sugar (dark or light)over medium heat.

As soon as it starts to boil, turn a timer on for three minutes.

Pour over saltines.

Put in 400 degree oven for 5 minutes.

Remove from oven and pour bag of chocolate chips on top. Let the chips sit and melt for about five minutes.

Spread and then put in refrigerator to cool and harden.

Break up into pieces.

Enjoy.  Try to eat just one.

SUPER EASY TOFFEE BARS

saltine crackers

1 cup butter

1 cup light or dark brown sugar
1 bag semisweet chocolate chips



1.Preheat oven to 400 degrees F  

2.Line cookie sheet with saltine crackers in single layer.(I put parchment paper down first) 

3.In a saucepan combine the sugar and the butter. Bring to a boil and boil for 3 minutes. Immediately pour over saltines and spread it over crackers completely.
4.Bake at 400 degrees F for 5 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips over the top. Let sit for 5 minutes. Spread melted chocolate. Cool completely and break into pieces.

Happy Father's Day

I am so thankful for my dad.
He has always been such a good example to me.
One thing I remember the most growing up with him is that he always, always, always got up early to read his Bible and pray.
Always.
Every morning.
Without fail.
Early.
I would see the light under his door and I knew what he was doing.
I want to be more like that.
I need to start out each day with my Heavenly Father.
I think my days would go much better.

I am also thankful for this dad.
My husband.
The one thing I appreciate the most about him is how he treats our children.
They mean the world to him and they know it.
When he sees them, he greets them like they are the most important thing in his life.
He asks them all sorts of questions about their day.
He plays with them.
A lot.
He lets them know they are important.

I count it a huge blessing to have these men in my life. :)

Happy Ending

In January, our family was blessed with a dog.
Someone was giving her away and we accepted her with very open arms.
Her name is Jessie and she is a miniature black Schnauser.
We never knew what joy a dog could bring to our lives.

Oh, how we love her.

On our kids' last day of school, Jessie threw up and collapsed all of a sudden. 
I thought she was dying.
I was right . . . she was.
I rushed her to the vet right away.
When we got there, she started losing blood out of both ends, poor thing. :(
She was diagnosed with Hamorrhagic GastroEnteritis, which is a very rare condition in which small dogs abruptly start vomiting blood and having bloody diarrhea (sorry I just said that word on my blog). 
I'm glad that I got her to the vet before the blood started coming.
They hooked her up to an IV and she stayed at the animal hospital for four days. ($$)

Miraculously, our sweet Jessie made it.
The vet said that if I had waited any longer, she would not have survived.
They have had only 2 other cases of HGE at that animal hospital and neither dog went home. :(
I am counting our little doggie blessing right now.
I am thankful that we were home when this hit her and that we could take her to the vet right away so she could be saved.

Writing Again

I have taken quite a break from blogging, but I have missed it.
Since the kids are all at school all day, I decided to start earning my keep around here.
I started painting signs.
I love it.
It is so therapeutic for me.
And people are actually buying them!!
